“Health to me means taking care of your body by feeding it nourishing food, giving you energy to incorporate into your daily life, or getting outside for a fun workout in the sun. It is also important to give your body a break when you need it.  It is a positive lifestyle change, meaning that it’s not just a 2-week health diet.” Shiva lives her life by making small changes in her lifestyle habits. It’s an ongoing, progressive journey, and it’s become something she wants to share with anyone interested in living a healthy lifestyle. As her final piece of advice, she wants students to make an extra effort in trying to maintain their health in school. Health is definitely one of her top priorities, and she sees it as an essential to living a happy and balanced life.

Global health- I will have a photo attached for this section. The one with the world. I also attached a photo of me talking by a poster, if that can be there also that would be great.

Shiva's international perspectives, a variety of research experiences, and her observations of different health care systems have motivated her for the next steps in her career. She's had the opportunity to compare different health care systems. From New Mexico, a state with a rich history and a culture unique in the U.S., to Oxnard, California where she has volunteered over 350 hours in a regional hospital.  Then to Taiwan, where she experienced radically different access while teaching.

Shiva wants to be part of a systematic change in health implementation in developing countries that are becoming more urbanized while nutritional decisions are also transitioning,Volunteering abroad and traveling to developing countries has reminded her of how she could become involved in improving the quality of life within a population on a worldwide scale. She is interested in nutritional decision-making and disease prevention research.

Shiva has received an Outstanding Contribution and Research Presentation at the Advancing Hispanic/Chicano and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) in 2014 and first place research poster and presentation in the Undergraduate Pipeline Network (UPN) at the University of New Mexico in the department of community health research in 2014. She is excited to continue her career in the health field by attending Oxford University for her masters in global healths science.
